2022 St Paul's Newsletter - Term 3, Week 3
From the Principal
Dear Families,
Tuesday 26 July is The Feast of Saints Anne and Joachim, Jesus’ Grandparents. We used this opportunity to host our Grandparents and Special Person's Day yesterday, Thursday 28 July. It was wonderful to see so many Grandparents and Special People in our students' lives visit us on the day. I wish to say a huge thank you to our staff for welcoming our guests and preparing and leading the activities with such enthusiasm! We also acknowledge Cathie Vermeer, Irene Haritos and our Year 2/3 students for leading the Mass (outstanding reading and singing everyone!), as well as Stephenie Peels for designing each activity and creating the special video shown at the beginning of Mass.
In many families, and this is true in my family, grandparents play a significant role in the lives of their grandchildren. The role of the 'grandparent' is many and varied, but important nonetheless. In some families, grandparents are relied upon for school pick up and drop off, or being the taxi driver for after-school activities. In my home, Natasha and I are both teachers and we rely heavily on grandparents to help us give our children every opportunity to participate in sport, attend our children's school events and be there when we have work commitments. Natasha and I have a blessed life, largely due to the support from our own parents.
We acknowledge that in some families grandparents are unable to fulfil such an active role in the lives of their grandchildren, due to distance (overseas or interstate), health and many other factors. Grandparents might live further away and cherish the precious time when they make the journey to visit and note 'how much you have grown' since they saw you last. In their absence there are often 'special people' in the lives of our children who are present to fill the void, to provide the practical or emotional support required in childhood and adolescence.
We say thank you for all that our grandparents and special people do for us. They provide much more than 'all care, no responsibility! Grandparents and special people play a significant role in influencing, shaping and moulding their loved ones in support of our role as parents. As a Catholic community, we thank God for their love, guidance and support on their journey of life and faith.
Grandparents and Special Persons
Car Park - Thank You
There has been a noticeable effort from our families with regard to the efficiency of our car park.
I have noticed that more students are holding hands with, or staying closer to, their caregivers when moving to and from their cars - THANK YOU! Please keep reminding your children of this most important safety requirement.
I have noticed this week that people using the drop off zone are remembering to stay in/with their vehicle - THANK YOU!!
School Musical: Wonder in Aliceland - Costumes
Costuming will require some community support, and we know that community is a strength at St Paul's so we are looking forward to working together to ensure our students are well prepared and amazingly presented.
We have come up with a list of costume items that will need to be brought from home by Monday, 15 August.
We will have our first whole school rehearsal Tuesday, August 16 to see how costumes are coming together and see what needs to be adjusted.
If there are any concerns about acquiring costumes, please don’t hesitate to contact Irene Haritos, Michael Watt or your child's classroom teacher.
On (or just before) Monday 15 August we ask that the following costume items be brought to school in a small (named) bag.
- PREP CR - Plain white long sleeved top, white leggings/pants
- YEAR 1/2 KR - Green long sleeve shirt, green leggings/pants
- YEAR 2/3 DV - Plain black long sleeve top, black leggings/pants
- YEAR 4 STUDENTS - Plain black long sleeve top, black leggings/pants
- YEAR 5 STUDENTS - Refer to the 26 July email, and the attached document for a guide on your character costume
- YEAR 6 STUDENTS - Refer to the 26 July email, and the attached document for a guide on your character costume
Year 5 and 6 Lead Roles: All we ask from our families is that they do their best. Please look at the photos emailed as a guide for your child's costume and go from there. Please reach out to Mrs Haritos or Mr Watt if you need any assistance at all.
Book Week Free Dress Day: Monday 22 August
Being so close to the school musical, costumes for Book Week might be a bit tricky! On Monday 22 August, students are invited to wear free dress, or "dress up" as their favourite book character.
Revised Statement of Commitment to Child Safety
From 1 July 2022, 11 new Child Safe Standards (CSS) replaced Victoria’s seven previous CSS
and principles. The new CSS are underpinned by Ministerial Order No. 1359: Implementing the Child Safe Standards – Managing the risk of child abuse in schools and school boarding premises
(MO 1359), which was released by the Victorian Government on 10 February 2022.
MO 1359 defines the actions schools and school boarding premises must take to meet the
requirements associated with the new CSS from 1 July 2022. A revised CECV Statement of Commitment to Child Safety, to reflect the new CSS and MO 1359, has been published (see below).
Warm regards,
Michael Watt
Division Netball
On Friday 22 July, our mixed netball team ventured off to the State Basketball Centre to compete in the Division level competition. The team played so well and improved with each game. We were close to winning the tournament on points. We came away with a win, two draws and one loss. They were nail biting games for sure. The teamwork and sportsmanship never faltered with this team. Great work Team!! Go St Paul's!
Division Soccer
On Wednesday the 27th July, our school soccer team braved the miserable rain and cold weather conditions to play 5 games of soccer at the Division level competition. The team tried their best and a notable player was Kristian who blocked 6 goals as goalie in one game alone.
Special thanks to Rosie Van Kampen for her coaching on the day.
