2024 St Paul's Newsletter - Term 3, Week 7
From the Principal
Good afternoon Families,
I hope that everyone has survived the crazy weather of the past few days, and as always if you need any assistance, please reach out to us at school.
Last week we had a beautiful day as a staff exploring the Bible and scripture. It was great to explore various aspects of the Bible, realising that many idioms we use today are from the Bible, we took a deep-dive into Luke's Gospel (which is the focus of next year), and finished the day with contemplation and prayer at Grant's Picnic Ground. Thanks to Prue Vanstan (MACS) and Carolynne for facilitating the day.
Tomorrow we begin the day with our Father’s Day Breakfast. I look forward to seeing many of you at school and hope that you enjoy the opportunity to have a beautiful breakfast, followed by being shown around the classroom by your child/children. Breakfast will begin at 8am in the undercover area. A big shout out to our Parents & Friends team for making this day happen.
Once all the dads have disappeared, the students will get a chance to go shopping for their dads/special person in their lives at our Father's Day Stall. So for our students, get busy tonight doing odd jobs to bring some cash tomorrow to buy something cool.
Tonight we have our Term 3 Working Bee starting at 3.15pm, with the main job being to distribute the soft fall mulch around the playground. We will also need to do some tidying up around the school and move some rubbish from the portable to the skip. Thanks to those families who have put their names down to volunteer, but even if your name isn’t down, please feel free to come and help out.
Our Musical, 'Ruby and the Marvellously Magical Music Cube', is going full steam ahead for our performance on Thursday 19th September (followed by a school closure day on Friday 20th). Students are rehearsing, props are being created and costumes are being worked on. Tickets went on sale last Friday and they are selling quickly. If you haven’t bought your allotted four tickets, I recommend getting in quickly - the link is here.
This is a reminder to all families that the balance of this year's school fees and levies are due by Friday 20th September. If this causes any concerns for any of our families, please come and speak to me.
Next Wednesday we have many of our Year 3-6 students competing at the District Athletics Day at the Morrison Reserve in Mt Evelyn. I wish all the students the best of luck in each of their events. Thank you to those parents offering support on the day.
One of the joys of getting old is there are body parts that don’t play like they used to. For me, it is my right knee, which will be looked at tomorrow. This means I won’t be at school the following week. However, I will still be working through emails and contactable through the office if you have any concerns. I am grateful to the Leadership Team, consisting of Carolynne, Kelly, Maria and Sarah, who will be the responsible people onsite during my absence. Feel free to reach out to them also during this time if you have any concerns.
I can now look forward to the beginning of the AFLW season (even if my ability to volunteer for the Essendon team is diminished for a few weeks), as we all have an equal chance of making finals.
I hope all our dads and special people in our lives have a great day on Sunday, that they are spoiled rotten, get breakfast in bed and enjoy time together with their families. We also keep in our prayers families and friends who find this time difficult.
Thanks,
Nick

Cybersafety
What is cyberbullying?
Cyberbullying is when someone is mean to a child or young person under 18 online so they feel bad or upset. It can happen on a social media site, game, app, or any other online or electronic service or platform. It can include: posts, comments, texts, messages, chats, livestreams, memes, images, videos and emails.
These are some examples of ways the internet can be used to make someone feel bad or upset:
- Sending hurtful messages about them or to them.
- Sharing embarrassing photos or videos of them, including sexual content.
- Spreading nasty online gossip about them.
- Leaving them out online.
- Creating fake accounts in their name.
- Tricking them into believing you are someone else.
For most children and young people, online life is a key part of their identity and how they communicate, so cyberbullying can be very harmful. It can cause a range of emotions including fear, anxiety, anger and despair. They may suffer trauma and ongoing depression.
Cyberbullying content can be reported to the online or electronic service or platform that was used to send, post or share it. This is usually the fastest way to get it removed.
Your child may not tell you if they are experiencing bullying behaviour online because of a fear it might make things worse for them, or they may lose access to their devices and the internet. They may also feel ashamed, especially if they have also been involved in bullying others online.
Signs to watch for
- Being upset after using the internet or their devices, such as mobile phones
- Changes in personality, such as becoming more withdrawn, anxious, sad or angry
- Appearing lonelier or more distressed
- Unexpected changes in friendship groups
- A slide in their school results
- Changes in their sleep patterns
- Avoiding school or clubs
- A decline in their physical health
- Becoming secretive about their online activities and device use.

Child Safe Standards: Ministerial Order 1359
St Paul's Primary School is a child safe organisation which welcomes all children, young people, and their families. We are committed to providing environments where our students are safe and feel safe, where their participation is valued, their views respected, and their voices are heard about decisions that affect their lives.
Our child safe policies, strategies and practices are inclusive of the needs of all children and students. We have no tolerance for child abuse and take proactive steps to identify and manage any risks of harm to students in our school environments. We also take proactive steps to identify and manage any risk of harm to students in our school. When child safety concerns are raised or identified, we treat these seriously and respond promptly and thoroughly.
The original Child Safe Standards were implemented in Victoria during 2016. They were developed in response to The Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Abuse (2013 - 2017). In 2019 Victoria agreed to adopt the National Principles for Child Safe Organisations. Schools are one example of a Child Safe Organisation.
There are eleven Child Safe Standards:
Child Safe Standard 1 – Organisations establish a culturally safe environment in which the diverse and unique identities and experiences of Aboriginal children and young people are respected and valued.
Child Safe Standard 2 – Child safety and wellbeing is embedded in organisational leadership, governance and culture.
Child Safe Standard 3 – Children and young people are empowered about their rights, participate in decisions affecting them and are taken seriously.
Child Safe Standard 4 – Families and communities are informed and involved in promoting child safety and wellbeing.
Child Safe Standard 5 – Equity is upheld and diverse needs respected in policy and practice.
Child Safe Standard 6 – People working with children and young people are suitable and
supported to reflect child safety and wellbeing values in practice.
Child Safe Standard 7 – Processes for complaints and concerns are child focused.
Child Safe Standard 8 – Staff and volunteers are equipped with the knowledge, skills and awareness to keep children and young people safe through ongoing education and training.
Child Safe Standard 9 – Physical and online environments promote safety and wellbeing while minimising the opportunity for children and young people to be harmed.
Child Safe Standard 10 – Implementation of the Child Safe Standards is regularly reviewed and improved.
Child Safe Standard 11 – Policies and procedures document how the organisation is safe for children and young people.
MACS provides Catholic schools with templates for the required documentation which we are required to adapt to reflect our school community whilst ensuring all legal requirements are met. Below are 3 key documents that we continue to review in light of the new standards:
