2024 St Paul's Newsletter - Term 2, Week 9
From the Principal
Good afternoon, everyone. I hope that this finds you rugged up, nice and warm. It most certainly has been a chilly week, and winter has said hello!
I would like to congratulate Stephenie Peels on being appointed full-time in the role of Inclusive Educator at The Knox School. Steph has been with St Paul’s for over ten years and has contributed to the community in many ways. Her knowledge, expertise and friendliness are going to be sorely missed, but this is an amazing opportunity for her. Her final day will be the last Friday of Term Two. We are finalising the replacement of Steph, and I will communicate this next week. We will celebrate Steph’s time at St Paul’s at the St Paul’s Feast Day mass on Wednesday, 26th June. We wish Steph all the best with the start of her new adventures.
As one of our community leaves, we welcome Lars Turpie, who was born earlier in the week. Congratulations to Kystol, Martin and Finn.
On Friday 21st June, your child/children’s reports will be sent home electronically via the nForma Parent Portal. Tomorrow there will be a letter sent home via email explaining the procedures for accessing the reports. It is important that your email details are up to date on our records. If you think they might not be, please contact Helen in the office.
On Monday an Operoo will be sent out at 9am, opening up booking times for the 3-way conversation meetings on Wednesday 26th June. Please note school finishes at 1 pm for students on this day. This is the first time we have used Operoo for booking interviews, so we welcome your feedback afterwards. If there are any issues, please let me know.
After meeting with the School Advisory Council last week, it has been decided that an Operoo will be sent home next week, with reminders about the usage of the carpark and acknowledging that you have read it. Later in the week, there will be another Operoo asking for help for the Country Fair next year. At the moment, we are short of volunteers who are vital to making this day a success. If you would like to discuss either of these forms, please come and see me.
Last week, we had our termly Working Bee. We updated our soft fall mulch beneath the play equipment, fixed some blinds, weeded some gardens, and removed leaf litter around the school. Many thanks to the families that attended: Whittaker, Perks, Nicosia, Holt/Arnot, Chrisohoidis and McErlain/Jenkins.
This is a reminder for families to please name their child/ren's jumpers and also to check the lost property wheelie bin in the church foyer area near the entrance to the library space. There are lots of items going missing and some of those that are handed in are are unable to be returned to their owners as they are unnamed.
We know that we have families with challenges at the moment, so we keep each other in our prayers. Please reach out if we can help at all as a community.
Have a great week ahead.
Thanks
Nick

Child Safe Standards: Ministerial Order 1359
St Paul's Primary School is a child safe organisation which welcomes all children, young people, and their families. We are committed to providing environments where our students are safe and feel safe, where their participation is valued, their views respected, and their voices are heard about decisions that affect their lives.
Our child safe policies, strategies and practices are inclusive of the needs of all children and students. We have no tolerance for child abuse and take proactive steps to identify and manage any risks of harm to students in our school environments. We also take proactive steps to identify and manage any risk of harm to students in our school. When child safety concerns are raised or identified, we treat these seriously and respond promptly and thoroughly.
The original Child Safe Standards were implemented in Victoria during 2016. They were developed in response to The Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Abuse (2013 - 2017). In 2019 Victoria agreed to adopt the National Principles for Child Safe Organisations. Schools are one example of a Child Safe Organisation.
There are eleven Child Safe Standards:
Child Safe Standard 1 – Organisations establish a culturally safe environment in which the diverse and unique identities and experiences of Aboriginal children and young people are respected and valued.
Child Safe Standard 2 – Child safety and wellbeing is embedded in organisational leadership, governance and culture.
Child Safe Standard 3 – Children and young people are empowered about their rights, participate in decisions affecting them and are taken seriously.
Child Safe Standard 4 – Families and communities are informed and involved in promoting child safety and wellbeing.
Child Safe Standard 5 – Equity is upheld and diverse needs respected in policy and practice.
Child Safe Standard 6 – People working with children and young people are suitable and
supported to reflect child safety and wellbeing values in practice.
Child Safe Standard 7 – Processes for complaints and concerns are child focused.
Child Safe Standard 8 – Staff and volunteers are equipped with the knowledge, skills and awareness to keep children and young people safe through ongoing education and training.
Child Safe Standard 9 – Physical and online environments promote safety and wellbeing while minimising the opportunity for children and young people to be harmed.
Child Safe Standard 10 – Implementation of the Child Safe Standards is regularly reviewed and improved.
Child Safe Standard 11 – Policies and procedures document how the organisation is safe for children and young people.
MACS provides Catholic schools with templates for the required documentation which we are required to adapt to reflect our school community whilst ensuring all legal requirements are met. Below are 3 key documents that we continue to review in light of the new standards:
