2024 St Paul's Newsletter - Term 2, Week 7
From the Principal
Good afternoon everyone. I hope this finds you well. I know that there are a few bugs floating around the school and society at the moment. My Bombers have been hit hard with illness for this weekend, so maybe not fly Virgin to the Gold Coast this weekend. But it also serves as a timely reminder that if your child has flu symptoms, then the best place for them is at home. Ironically enough, we started taking down COVID posters this week, but it is still around. Please continue to look after yourselves.
The prayer for this week focuses on Baptism, and we are grateful for the opportunity to welcome Mirikki and Charlotte to our church through baptism. Mirikki was baptised last weekend, and Charlotte this weekend. I hope that you celebrated accordingly. This time next week, we will also have celebrated the Sacrament of Reconciliation with our Year 3/4/5 students on Wednesday afternoon.
Last Friday, we had our District Cross Country. Firstly, each student represented St Paul’s amazingly. Their behaviour was exemplary, their support of each other was magnificent and their effort competing was awesome. It was great to see many families come along and support. We had 29 students competing for the day, showing great determination. We had six students make it to Division Cross Country at Yarra Glen. Well done, everyone!
We have a busy week ahead next week. Our Division Cross Country students will run on Tuesday, the same day we have our Open Morning. We have the aforementioned Sacrament of Reconciliation on Wednesday afternoon, followed by the SAC meeting. If you have anything that you feel needs to be discussed at SAC please reach out to me, Cara Kirby, or any of the other members. Thursday, we have our next Working Bee. We would love to see you if you have nominated for this event. This is followed by our Year 5 students demonstrating their learning at St Joseph’s College for their Lighthouse Project. Finally, Friday is a school closure day, where the staff will focus on mathematics. This will lead to the King’s Birthday Public Holiday the following Monday.
I hope that you all have a great week. Please let us know if we can do anything to assist you and your family.
Thanks
Nick

Prep Taster Day #3 - Science Fair
We had fun this morning being scientists with Mrs Kerr:
We read the book, "Who Sank the Boat?", and then did some guessing;
We talked about how we were going to do science and what science is;
We watched a mini clip of Blippi and guessed which of the items he used would sink or float;
Then we made a boat out of foil and had to guess if the special items would sink or float;
After than we experimented with our boats and if they sank we fixed them by adding more foil.

Reconciliation Week
ABORIGINAL AND TORRES STRAIT ISLANDER 2024 NATIONAL RECONCILIATION WEEK
National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.
The National Reconciliation Week theme for 2024, “Now More Than Ever”, is a reminder to all of us that no matter what, the fight for justice and the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people will — and must — continue.
The dates for NRW remain the same each year; 27 May to 3 June. These dates commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey— the successful 1967 referendum, and the High Court Mabo decision respectively.
Students have been reading stories by First Nations People, learning about reconciliation and creating some beautiful artwork.
These pics are of a collaborative colouring in that 1/2 D did as part of Reconciliation Week. The original artwork is by Zachary Bennet-Brook.
Student Wellbeing
The emotions wheel is a great tool to use with young people as it helps with labelling and communicating 'Big Feelings'.

Child Safe Standards: Ministerial Order 1359
St Paul's Primary School is a child safe organisation which welcomes all children, young people, and their families. We are committed to providing environments where our students are safe and feel safe, where their participation is valued, their views respected, and their voices are heard about decisions that affect their lives.
Our child safe policies, strategies and practices are inclusive of the needs of all children and students. We have no tolerance for child abuse and take proactive steps to identify and manage any risks of harm to students in our school environments. We also take proactive steps to identify and manage any risk of harm to students in our school. When child safety concerns are raised or identified, we treat these seriously and respond promptly and thoroughly.
The original Child Safe Standards were implemented in Victoria during 2016. They were developed in response to The Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Abuse (2013 - 2017). In 2019 Victoria agreed to adopt the National Principles for Child Safe Organisations. Schools are one example of a Child Safe Organisation.
There are eleven Child Safe Standards:
Child Safe Standard 1 – Organisations establish a culturally safe environment in which the diverse and unique identities and experiences of Aboriginal children and young people are respected and valued.
Child Safe Standard 2 – Child safety and wellbeing is embedded in organisational leadership, governance and culture.
Child Safe Standard 3 – Children and young people are empowered about their rights, participate in decisions affecting them and are taken seriously.
Child Safe Standard 4 – Families and communities are informed and involved in promoting child safety and wellbeing.
Child Safe Standard 5 – Equity is upheld and diverse needs respected in policy and practice.
Child Safe Standard 6 – People working with children and young people are suitable and
supported to reflect child safety and wellbeing values in practice.
Child Safe Standard 7 – Processes for complaints and concerns are child focused.
Child Safe Standard 8 – Staff and volunteers are equipped with the knowledge, skills and awareness to keep children and young people safe through ongoing education and training.
Child Safe Standard 9 – Physical and online environments promote safety and wellbeing while minimising the opportunity for children and young people to be harmed.
Child Safe Standard 10 – Implementation of the Child Safe Standards is regularly reviewed and improved.
Child Safe Standard 11 – Policies and procedures document how the organisation is safe for children and young people.
MACS provides Catholic schools with templates for the required documentation which we are required to adapt to reflect our school community whilst ensuring all legal requirements are met. Below are 3 key documents that we continue to review in light of the new standards:
