2024 St Paul's Newsletter - Term 2, Week 3
From the Principal
Hello to our families, I hope this finds you all well on this beautiful sunny day.
This morning, we had the first of our Prep Taster Day sessions. Steph led the families through ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt,’ which is one of the Frederiksen family’s favourite books. The children listened to the story, did some crafts and went on their own bear hunt. There were lots of smiling faces. We continue to have school tours, which is great, and if you know of anyone looking to enrol their child, please encourage them to come and have a visit.
Yesterday, we had our first annual Cross-Country Day. This was amazing, well organised, and run by our PE teacher Emma-lee Curwood. She even managed to organise the weather. It was great to see all students achieve some success around the course, by having a go and doing their best. The biggest impact for the school is that our Cross Country team has almost doubled. The invites went through on Operoo last night.
Tomorrow the Year 4 students are attending taster day day sessions at Mater Christi College and St Joseph’s Secondary College. It is great that our local feeder schools provide these opportunities for our students.
Next Wednesday we have our school photo day. This will be a full winter uniform day. We hope that the photos will be completed in the morning session if you need to book appointments that day.
The Mother’s Day breakfast, followed by the Mother’s Day stall, will be held at the end of next week on Friday 10 May (see flyer further in this newsletter). Thank you to our wonderful parents on Parents & Friends who are coordinating this day. Going forward Carla Rademaker will be finishing her time with P&F after 5 years. I thank Carla for all the work she has done with the P&F, as a school we are very grateful to her for her efforts and support. This means that we are continuing to look for volunteers to join this committee and help out. If you are interested, please speak with me or contact the school office.
It continues to come to my attention about issues in the carpark. We are working through various options for the carpark, but in the mean time please remember to be safe throughout this space, being vigilant of children and other cars. Finally, there is to be no parking on the footpath, please. There will be signs up this afternoon to remind you. This is an OHS issue as the public and a lot of families use this pathway. If you have any queries please come and see me.
I hope that you have a great week ahead.
Thanks
Nick
Andrew Chinn Workshops and Evening Concert
On Tuesday 14 May, St Paul's is very lucky to have Andrew Chinn visiting for the day. Andrew Chinn is an Australian songwriter and singer who has recorded several CDs. The students at St Paul's are familiar with Andrew's work with many of his songs used in the classrooms and as part of Mass.
During the day, students will participate in workshops where they will spend time learning words and actions for different songs. At the evening concert, the students, accompanied by Andrew Chinn, will perform the songs that they have learnt during the day for their families. In the past, this whole experience has been one that the students have expressed enjoyment in participating in. The evening concert will take place at 6.30pm in St Paul's Church. We are looking forward to seeing you all there!

Cross Country Newsletter!
This week we had a whole school cross country. Everyone participated and had a great time! Each age group ran a certain amount of laps and the Year 6s got to run with their buddies. Mr Salan said ‘I thought it was great to see that everyone was representing their house colours and giving 100% effort the whole way through.’
We are all super thankful for Mrs Curwood for organising all of the cross country and the rest of the teachers and parents for all the support you’ve given.

Child Safe Standards: Ministerial Order 1359
St Paul's Primary School is a child safe organisation which welcomes all children, young people, and their families. We are committed to providing environments where our students are safe and feel safe, where their participation is valued, their views respected, and their voices are heard about decisions that affect their lives.
Our child safe policies, strategies and practices are inclusive of the needs of all children and students. We have no tolerance for child abuse and take proactive steps to identify and manage any risks of harm to students in our school environments. We also take proactive steps to identify and manage any risk of harm to students in our school. When child safety concerns are raised or identified, we treat these seriously and respond promptly and thoroughly.
The original Child Safe Standards were implemented in Victoria during 2016. They were developed in response to The Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Abuse (2013 - 2017). In 2019 Victoria agreed to adopt the National Principles for Child Safe Organisations. Schools are one example of a Child Safe Organisation.
There are eleven Child Safe Standards:
Child Safe Standard 1 – Organisations establish a culturally safe environment in which the diverse and unique identities and experiences of Aboriginal children and young people are respected and valued.
Child Safe Standard 2 – Child safety and wellbeing is embedded in organisational leadership, governance and culture.
Child Safe Standard 3 – Children and young people are empowered about their rights, participate in decisions affecting them and are taken seriously.
Child Safe Standard 4 – Families and communities are informed and involved in promoting child safety and wellbeing.
Child Safe Standard 5 – Equity is upheld and diverse needs respected in policy and practice.
Child Safe Standard 6 – People working with children and young people are suitable and
supported to reflect child safety and wellbeing values in practice.
Child Safe Standard 7 – Processes for complaints and concerns are child focused.
Child Safe Standard 8 – Staff and volunteers are equipped with the knowledge, skills and awareness to keep children and young people safe through ongoing education and training.
Child Safe Standard 9 – Physical and online environments promote safety and wellbeing while minimising the opportunity for children and young people to be harmed.
Child Safe Standard 10 – Implementation of the Child Safe Standards is regularly reviewed and improved.
Child Safe Standard 11 – Policies and procedures document how the organisation is safe for children and young people.
MACS provides Catholic schools with templates for the required documentation which we are required to adapt to reflect our school community whilst ensuring all legal requirements are met. Below are 3 key documents that we continue to review in light of the new standards:
