2023 St Paul's Newsletter - Term 3, Week 6
From the Principal
Dear Families,
How amazing were the Australian Women's Soccer Team - the Mighty Matildas? Their performance across the World Cup Tournament featured the full spectrum of highs and lows that sport offers. The nation is so proud of the team even though we didn't get to play off in the final, and we can learn so many lessons from their experience.
Sport fosters growth that goes beyond developing physical abilities. As parents, we know that when our children participate in sport they learn stronger coping mechanisms for life's highs and lows.
People learn to give and take, compromise and be part of a team through sport. An important part of playing in a team is accepting discipline. Playing sport means children are expected to follow rules, accept decisions and learn about consequences of our actions. Sport teaches us to take directions from the coach and referees.
Kids learn how to win and lose when they play sports. It takes maturity and practise to be a good winner and a good loser. Like decisions, results won't always go the way we want them to go! Last night is a great example of this. Winning is great because it validates the hard work and planning that takes place in the lead-up to the match. Losing is a crucial component of building resilience because it teaches us how to deal with setbacks and disappointment. This is something the Matildas will be grappling with today, but we know they will bounce back and give their all in the third place play-off match.
Sporting activities teach kids how to manage their emotions and turn negative sentiments into good ones. Sport also aids in the development of patience and the knowledge that both physical prowess and academic performance can be improved with a lot of practice.
The students at St Paul's are learning these lessons frequently by playing games together in the yard at play times, through physical education lessons with Mrs Curwood, and through their class sport with the classroom teacher. It is a pleasure to see our students take opportunities to participate in school sports. The St Paul's children enjoy the opportunity to learn, grow and develop their sporting abilities, as well as their social and emotional capabilities, through the many and varied opportunities that sport provides.
We congratulate the Matildas on their incredible achievement of reaching the World Cup Semi-Final and we will all be barracking hard for them on Saturday night!
NED Show Yo-Yo Sales
Thank you to all the families who have supported the NED Show. The NED Show is a wonderful program that centres around three important messages that have life long relevance: "Never Give Up ~ Encourage
Others ~ Do Your Best." This is a message that we at St Paul’s strongly support. The NED Show visits schools all over the world, free of charge, and in exchange, the organisers ask that we sell their yo-yo products as a way for them to fundraise to keep the program going. Our families purchased several yo-yo's and on behalf of the NED team we say a huge THANK YOU.
New Arrival!
On behalf of everyone at St Paul's we congratulate Laura and David on the safe arrival of their beautiful baby girl, Harper. Poppy (Prep) will make a wonderful big sister!
TOMORROW: WEAR A TOUCH OF ORANGE!
National Day of Action Against Bullying: 18 August
Friday 18 August is the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence (NDA).
On Friday 18 August, we encourage students and staff to wear a TOUCH OF ORANGE in recognition of National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence. This might be a T-shirt, socks, orange shoes, anything orange! If a student has no orange clothing items that is ok, we don't expect families to purchase items. This is not a Free Dress Day, simply we encourage students to wear a touch of orange if possible, and the rest of their clothing is school uniform.
We will have a Book Week Dress Up Day on Monday 21 August. Children are encouraged to dress up as their favourite book character for the day.
At 9:00am on Monday all students will gather in the Church for a 'parade'. Parents are warmly invited to join us!
Emerald Barbecue
Last Saturday we hosted the Emerald Barbecue at Emerald Village Meats. Thank you to the families that volunteered their time for this Emerald Barbecue: Rubio, Coffey, Colussi, Klages/Gilchrist and Pezzaniti.

Just a reminder (from last week) that I will be travelling with a group of 20 Catholic School Principals from my Outer East Network to Cairns on Friday morning to take part in a Cultural Immersion Tour in Cape York. This experience will be an opportunity to stay on Country and experience life in remote indigenous communities.
I will be off-site for 10 days, beginning on Friday 18 August, and will return to St Paul's on Monday 28 August. Carolynne Boyd is Acting Principal in my absence, and if Carolynne is not available, Kelly Geoghegan or Maria Cook are Acting Principals.

Yours sincerely,
Michael Watt

Child Safe Standards: Ministerial Order 1359
St Paul's Primary School is a child safe organisation which welcomes all children, young people, and their families. We are committed to providing environments where our students are safe and feel safe, where their participation is valued, their views respected, and their voices are heard about decisions that affect their lives.
Our child safe policies, strategies and practices are inclusive of the needs of all children and students. We have no tolerance for child abuse and take proactive steps to identify and manage any risks of harm to students in our school environments. We also take proactive steps to identify and manage any risk of harm to students in our school. When child safety concerns are raised or identified, we treat these seriously and respond promptly and thoroughly.
The original Child Safe Standards were implemented in Victoria during 2016. They were developed in response to The Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Abuse (2013 - 2017). In 2019 Victoria agreed to adopt the National Principles for Child Safe Organisations. Schools are one example of a Child Safe Organisation.
There are eleven Child Safe Standards:
Child Safe Standard 1 – Organisations establish a culturally safe environment in which the diverse and unique identities and experiences of Aboriginal children and young people are respected and valued.
Child Safe Standard 2 – Child safety and wellbeing is embedded in organisational leadership, governance and culture.
Child Safe Standard 3 – Children and young people are empowered about their rights, participate in decisions affecting them and are taken seriously.
Child Safe Standard 4 – Families and communities are informed and involved in promoting child safety and wellbeing.
Child Safe Standard 5 – Equity is upheld and diverse needs respected in policy and practice.
Child Safe Standard 6 – People working with children and young people are suitable and
supported to reflect child safety and wellbeing values in practice.
Child Safe Standard 7 – Processes for complaints and concerns are child focused.
Child Safe Standard 8 – Staff and volunteers are equipped with the knowledge, skills and awareness to keep children and young people safe through ongoing education and training.
Child Safe Standard 9 – Physical and online environments promote safety and wellbeing while minimising the opportunity for children and young people to be harmed.
Child Safe Standard 10 – Implementation of the Child Safe Standards is regularly reviewed and improved.
Child Safe Standard 11 – Policies and procedures document how the organisation is safe for children and young people.
MACS provides Catholic schools with templates for the required documentation which we are required to adapt to reflect our school community whilst ensuring all legal requirements are met. Below are 3 key documents that we continue to review in light of the new standards:
