2023 St Paul's Newsletter - Term 2, Week 5
From the Principal
2023 ART SHOW
Dear Families,
There are only 6 SLEEPS to go until our Art Show!
EVERY child in the school will have Art on display. As the Art Show is a special school event in which to showcase the children’s skills, we hope and anticipate that every family will take the opportunity to attend the evening.
Our Art Show is promising to be a fun evening in which to celebrate the artwork that has been completed by our children. Even staff members have completed a canvas for the evening.
There will also be six very special art pieces put up for auction, with each piece collectively completed by the children from each class.
Can I remind parents and children that as this is a family event, we would like to see children sharing the evening with their parents. Consequently, children should not be
left unsupervised. Thank you.
Our 2023 Art Show will be open on Wednesday 31 May from 6:00pm - 8:00pm. Our Art Show Entry Fee is a gold coin donation per person, and it is shaping up to be a wonderful evening! The Art Show will feature many exciting opportunities including:
- Masterpieces created by students on display
- Auctions of classroom art pieces
- Match the staff art work to the artist
- Visit the classrooms
- A sausage sizzle*
- Coffee Van*
- And so much more!
*We are aware that the time of the Art Show will be around the same time as many families have their dinner. Grant, from Empire Coffee, will be running a coffee van. Hot drinks can be purchased. Chai, Coffee, Hot Chocolate will be available for purchase... Further to this the St Paul's staff will have a free sausage sizzle running.
We look forward to seeing you on the night!
2023 Confirmation
We congratulate:
Esther, Oscar, Clodagh, Sebastian, Zachary, Stella, Benji, Grace, Ryder, Liam, Katie, Thomas, Morgan, Jessica, Lola, Ella, Maya
These students, with the support of their family, parish and school, were initiated as full members of the Church community last Saturday as they received the Sacrament of Confirmation.
We thank the Very Reverend Fr Tony Kerin (Eastern Region Episcopal Vicar) for confirming the candidates and leading a most special ceremony. Thanks also to concelebrant Fr Anthony Cruz and Irene and Megan for leading the beautiful singing and music. We thank and acknowledge the staff for their support, especially Cathie Vermeer, Jo McIntosh and Daniel Salan, who prepared the students. Thank you very much to all of the families and friends that were involved in the day, it was an exceptional celebration.
Healesville Sanctuary Excursion
There was a huge buzz around the school today!
It was a wonderful day at Healesville Sanctuary yesterday for our whole school excursion. It was a brilliant learning experience for our students, who exercised their scientific skills and conducted research on habitats and sustainability.
Our students are a credit to their parents and their school. They displayed exemplary behaviour and truly acted out our school values as we moved throughout Healesville Sanctuary. Further to this, it was so fantastic to have our parents join us for the day. Many parent helpers made themselves available to travel to and from the excursion by bus, and it was fantastic to see several other parents make the journey independently as well.
Truly, it was a pleasure to have our entire school community enjoy the day together.
Prayer Gathering Assembly
This Monday the whole school will gather for our next Prayer Gathering. 1/2D are our hosts and we will begin at 2:10pm, all welcome.
Magic Carpet: Once again - It is the St Paul's Way!
I wish to wholeheartedly THANK our community for the response we received last week when we put a call out for assistance with laying carpet. Many families offered assistance, which is AMAZING! Straight after the Confirmation ceremony our volunteers began laying the carpet for the Art Show and before I could even get changed, the job was completed! Thank you so much to the dads that came along, even if you weren't required!!
Book Club - THANK YOU!
For many many years, Sally Moody has been coordinating our book club orders. Sally has been extremely reliable and she has done a fantastic job, ensuring that all of our families receive their book club orders in an accurate and timely fashion. We can’t thank Sally enough. Sally’s youngest child, Katie, will finish grade 6 this year, and therefore Sally has been looking for a parent to take over this role.
We are thrilled to announce that Kathryn Sheers (Mia, Prep) has kindly volunteered to take over as our book club coordinator, and we are extremely grateful to Kathryn for this. We thank Sally for all of the years that she has coordinated the book club, and we thank Kathryn for taking over. Sally and Kathryn will now begin the transition process.
Wear It Yellow Day: Friday 2 June
Next week is Reconciliation Week.
Reconciliation Week is strongly linked with our Catholic values which leads us to be inclusive, and promote justice and respect for all.
Reconciliation Week aligns with our school values of justice, respect and wisdom.
Teaching Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives are a mandated part of the Curriculum across all schools.
Child Safe Standard 1 states that organisations establish a culturally safe environment in which the diverse and unique identities and experiences of Aboriginal children and young people are respected and valued.
Wear It Yellow is an annual campaign held by Children's Ground during National Reconciliation Week (27 May to 3 June). Children's Ground is an organisation that encourages schools, workplaces and organisations to wear yellow for a day in the spirit of Reconciliation Week. Children's Ground is a First Nations not-for-profit organisation, aiming to change the future for First Nations children, families and communities. First Nations communities across Central Australia and the Top End lead Children's Ground.
On Friday, June 2 we will encourage students and staff to wear a TOUCH OF YELLOW. This might be a T-shirt, socks, yellow shoes, anything yellow! Just as we do when we wear a touch of red in October on Day for Daniel.
In classrooms, our staff will facilitate age-appropriate learning about the spirit of Reconciliation week, which is centred on the message of strengthening relationships between the wider Australian community and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples for the benefit of all Australians.
Mountain District Cross Country Carnival
Tomorrow we have 13 students competing in the Mountain District, Cross Country carnival at Crystal Brook Picnic Ground. Once again, we thank the parents of these students for supporting this event and transporting their children to and from the carnival. Mrs Curwood will be in attendance and we thank her for organising and supporting this event. Those students that are running tomorrow but are coming to school first can wear their school sport uniform. Good luck to all the competitors!

Child Safe Standards: Ministerial Order 1359
The original Child Safe Standards were implemented in Victoria during 2016. They were developed in response to The Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Abuse (2013 - 2017). In 2019 Victoria agreed to adopt the National Principles for Child Safe Organisations. Schools are one example of a Child Safe Organisation.
There are eleven Child Safe Standards:
Child Safe Standard 1 – Organisations establish a culturally safe environment in which the diverse and unique identities and experiences of Aboriginal children and young people are respected and valued.
Child Safe Standard 2 – Child safety and wellbeing is embedded in organisational leadership, governance and culture.
Child Safe Standard 3 – Children and young people are empowered about their rights, participate in decisions affecting them and are taken seriously.
Child Safe Standard 4 – Families and communities are informed and involved in promoting child safety and wellbeing.
Child Safe Standard 5 – Equity is upheld and diverse needs respected in policy and practice.
Child Safe Standard 6 – People working with children and young people are suitable and
supported to reflect child safety and wellbeing values in practice.
Child Safe Standard 7 – Processes for complaints and concerns are child focused.
Child Safe Standard 8 – Staff and volunteers are equipped with the knowledge, skills and awareness to keep children and young people safe through ongoing education and training.
Child Safe Standard 9 – Physical and online environments promote safety and wellbeing while minimising the opportunity for children and young people to be harmed.
Child Safe Standard 10 – Implementation of the Child Safe Standards is regularly reviewed and improved.
Child Safe Standard 11 – Policies and procedures document how the organisation is safe for children and young people.
MACS provides Catholic schools with templates for the required documentation which we are required to adapt to reflect our school community whilst ensuring all legal requirements are met. Below are 3 key documents that we continue to review in light of the new standards:
